Issue_03 Boom or Bust

the first ‘real’ issue of disparate is here!  This is the first issue to be 100% user generated, from content to editing, we are very excited about this.

A great big thank you to Marten Dashorst for editing and to all contributors for their thoughts, words and efforts.

Boom or Bust(?)

Economic ‘growth’ progresses, construction increases.  More is better, as is newer.  Progress is good, we’re all getting rich together.  The poor get new schools – paid for by the builders… somehow – aren’t they lucky?  We’ll all be rich soon, but until then have some credit, they know you’re good for it!

Economic ‘growth’ slows, construction slows.  Not just construction, but every thing that even indicates that society isn’t a collection of people but rather a group working to make life on an inhospitable planet better for everyone.  What is really important is that the wealthy remain wealthy, any change to the ‘growth’ model would be immoral.  No, no need to complain really – good art is inspired by adversity isn’t it, and poor people are so much better at that sort of thing.

What was boom?  What is bust?  Where is the crisis, where are the opportunities?  Is Architecture (with a capital A) important?  Is it a saviour?  Will is weaken in recession, or has it been delivered from the pressure cooker of boom?  Is architecture (with a little a) fit to cope with non-economic crises?  Is it fit for purpose?  Do architects deserve respect or do they need to be dealt with though legislation?  Is legislation a tool they can wield?

Issue_03 is looking for opinions on boom and bust, what does it mean to you, where you are from?  Is there a solution, or are we caught up in something as uncontrollable as the seasons?  Where is the inspiration to come from?  Most importantly, how does it make you FEEL?

A word from the editor:

“here you go. it is really print only though, since i matched up the pages so that when you print, just press double sided and it will come out like totally fine. otherwise, people ‘ll just have to rely on the good ole scissors and tape ;-)

So now you know, download it here.  And remember to print it, hand it out and take some photos of it and send them in to us.
