Issue_04 ADAPTATION

Guest Editor Micheal Thorp has delivered me the latest edition of Disparate – issue_04 ADAPTATION.  We’d been trying to avoid external hosting of the magazine for download, but this issue is such high quality that to cope with the file size I’ve had to turn to issuu.com for some extra clout - links below the yack.

Adaptation is the jump off point for everything in the built environment.  The first form of adaptation comes when people change their environment, whether this is the proto-architecture of building a shelter out of branches and leaves or building dykes and canals to regain land from the sea.  The second form of adaptation is what that new environment causes in its users, from the basic sense of increased comfort to a possible sense of alienation.

But what is in between?  What happens between a deregulated planning free for all, and the constraints of the dominance of capitol over inhabitants?

What are the interactions of adaptation that happen during and after disaster?  What adaptations are people willing to make to achieve a sense of no change at all?  Where are the cracks in the system that allow for the unusual, and even for new methods of doing?  Is it good, is it bad, or is it just what it is?

Adaptation happens every day, from the spectacular to the mundane, and as usual we want your thoughts and reaction to all it covers.

issue_04 brings on board the artistic and creative talents of Michael Thorp as editor and one issue taste maker.  Micheal is the first incumbent of the editorial role without a back ground in architecture of any sort – and we couldn’t be more delighted.

There are a few bugs in the system still, so online viewing may be a bit odd – but at the end of the day, this is a print magazine so print it and your troubles go away.

As ever, PLEASE PRINT IT OUT, and leave it in your favourite hang outs – cafes, book shops, community rooms, universities, buses, whatever.  Where possible please get a snap of it in location and send it to us for the gallery.
